Multiplexing and Demultiplexing in Networking: How Data Shares a Single Channel

Imagine dozens of applications on your machine all trying to talk to the network at the same time—your browser loading pages, a background sync job running, maybe even a streaming service buffering data. Yet, your system manages to send and receive all that traffic over a limited number of network interfaces.

That coordination isn’t magic. It’s handled by two fundamental concepts in networking: multiplexing and demultiplexing.

Start with a concrete example

Let’s say your machine is doing three things simultaneously:

  • Fetching data from an API (port 443)
  • Running a local database (port 5432)
  • Listening for SSH connections (port 22)

All of this traffic goes through the same network interface. So how does the system keep everything organized?

This is where multiplexing and demultiplexing step in.

Multiplexing: combining multiple streams

Multiplexing is the process of taking multiple data streams and combining them into a single stream for transmission over a shared medium.

At the transport layer (TCP/UDP), multiplexing happens when data from multiple applications is packed together and sent through the same network connection.

What actually gets combined?

Each piece of data (a segment or datagram) is tagged with:

  • Source port
  • Destination port
  • IP addresses
  • Protocol (TCP or UDP)

These identifiers allow multiple conversations to coexist over the same channel.

Demultiplexing: sorting on arrival

Demultiplexing is the reverse process. When data arrives at a system, it needs to be routed to the correct application.

The operating system inspects the headers (especially port numbers) and forwards the data to the appropriate process.

If your system receives incoming packets:

  • Packets for port 80 → sent to your web server
  • Packets for port 22 → sent to SSH daemon
  • Packets for port 3000 → sent to your local app

This routing logic is demultiplexing in action.

Load balancers multiplex incoming client requests and distribute them across backend services.

In Kubernetes, multiple pods share node networking. Ports and services rely heavily on demultiplexing.

4. SSH multiplexing

SSH can reuse a single TCP connection for multiple sessions, reducing overhead.

A common mistake developers make

Confusing ports with processes.

Ports are just identifiers used for multiplexing/demultiplexing—they don’t "belong" to applications in a strict sense. The OS maps them dynamically.

This becomes obvious when debugging issues like:

  • Port conflicts
  • Zombie processes holding ports
  • Unexpected traffic routing

Performance considerations

Multiplexing improves efficiency but introduces trade-offs:

  • Pros: Better bandwidth utilization, fewer connections
  • Cons: Increased complexity, potential bottlenecks

For example, HTTP/2 multiplexing allows multiple requests over a single TCP connection—but head-of-line blocking can still occur at the transport layer.

Multiplexing beyond networking

The concept shows up in other systems too:

  • CPU scheduling (multiple processes sharing a core)
